SPOTLIGHT: Sergeant Monica Lin Brown

United States Army
Operation Enduring Freedom

Running Toward The Wounded

On April 25, 2007, Sergeant Monica Brown was serving as a combat medic with the 4th Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division in Afghanistan.

While traveling in a convoy through eastern Afghanistan, her unit was struck by an improvised explosive device and immediately came under enemy attack.

Several soldiers suffered serious injuries.

The battlefield became chaos.

Brown moved directly toward the wounded.

A Medic’s Mission

Ignoring enemy fire and the danger around her, Brown:

  • treated severely wounded soldiers
  • shielded casualties with her own body
  • moved repeatedly through the kill zone
  • provided life-saving medical care
  • helped evacuate the injured

Her actions saved lives and demonstrated extraordinary courage under fire.

The Silver Star

For her heroism, Sergeant Brown received the Silver Star.

She became one of the first women since World War II to receive the award for combat actions in a war zone.

Yet those who served with her remember something even more important:

She never saw herself as a hero.

She saw herself as a medic doing her job.

Reflection

Some warriors carry rifles.

Some carry medical bags.

Both run toward danger when others need them.

Monica Brown carried hope into the middle of a battlefield.

Legacy

Her courage serves as a reminder that heroism takes many forms.

Sometimes it is measured not by the enemy defeated, but by the lives saved.

Closing

Sergeant Monica Lin Brown demonstrated the courage, compassion, and selfless service that define the very best of America. While others sought cover, she moved toward those who needed her most. As America celebrates its 250th Anniversary, we proudly honor Sergeant Monica Brown and all combat medics who have risked their lives to save others on the battlefield.

The Micky Spano Radio Show proudly honors Sergeant Monica Lin Brown, United States Army, as America 250 Veteran of the Day for June 16, 2026.
