SPOTLIGHT: Petty Officer Second Class Michael A. Monsoor
United States Navy
SEAL Team Three
April 5, 1981 – September 29, 2006
Michael A Monsoor
Why Monsoor?
Because his story represents the ultimate act of sacrifice.
On September 29, 2006, Monsoor was serving as a Navy SEAL sniper and security element member during operations in Ramadi, Iraq.
His team occupied a rooftop observation post overlooking insurgent activity.
Then a grenade landed among the SEALs.
There was no time.
No discussion.
No hesitation.
A Split-Second Decision
The grenade landed close to several teammates.
Monsoor could have attempted to escape.
Instead, he threw himself onto the grenade.
His actions absorbed the blast and saved the lives of fellow SEALs standing nearby.
He died from his wounds.
His teammates lived.
The Warrior Ethos
Among Navy SEALs, loyalty to teammates is everything.
Monsoor embodied that ideal in its purest form.
When faced with a choice between his own life and the lives of his teammates, he chose them.
Medal of Honor
In 2008, President George W Bush awarded the Medal of Honor posthumously to Michael Monsoor.
Today, his name is carried by the guided-missile destroyer:
USS Michael Monsoor (DDG-1001)
A fitting tribute to a sailor whose courage continues to inspire future generations.
Reflection
Great heroes are remembered not for what they took from life,

His actions saved lives.
