Today, for Veteran of the Day: America 250, we proudly honor Second Lieutenant John Edward Butts, a brave American soldier whose courage in battle reflected the very best of our nation.
Lieutenant Butts served with Company E, 60th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division during World War II. In the fierce fighting in Normandy, France, he demonstrated extraordinary heroism under relentless enemy fire.
His actions in June 1944 were not defined by a single moment of courage, but by repeated acts of sacrifice and leadership. Despite being wounded in combat, he repeatedly chose to remain with his men and continue the mission. He pressed forward in the face of danger, inspiring those around him by refusing to give in to pain, fear, or overwhelming odds.
On June 23, 1944, while leading his platoon against a heavily defended enemy position, Lieutenant Butts was again seriously wounded. Even so, he refused evacuation and continued directing the attack. His determination and selfless devotion to duty helped drive the assault forward, but he was ultimately killed in action.
For his conspicuous gallantry, intrepidity, and leadership above and beyond the call of duty, Second Lieutenant John Edward Butts was awarded the Medal of Honor posthumously.
His legacy stands as a reminder that freedom has often depended on ordinary Americans doing extraordinary things.
Lieutenant Butts did not retreat when wounded.
He did not step aside when others depended on him.
He led from the front—and gave his life doing so.
As America moves toward its 250th birthday, we remember men like John Edward Butts, whose sacrifice helped defend liberty far from home and whose example still speaks to us today.
